Day 02 Writing Workout

Welcome to day two of our thirty-day writing workout!
We’ll be building our writing muscles bit by bit, adding onto our previous gains. With that in mind, let’s get to…
EKPHRASIS.
Ekphrasis involves taking creative work in one form and then using it as inspiration for creative work in another genre. For example, if you look at a painting and then write a poem about it, see a sculpture and write a song about it, or hear some song lyrics and write a novel with a character like the singer, you are performing a work of ekphrasis.
Yesterday, we learned about SCALES–daily prompts that help us get into the flow. Set a timer for five to ten minutes and keep the pen moving if possible. (Remember to do these with pen and paper in a scales journal–check back to day one if you forget what that’s all about.)
For today, our scale is going to involve ekphrasis. You have two options:
OPTION 1: Go to a website like www.mymodernmet.com, and find a photo, a painting, or some other work of art that you can mindspew on for five to ten minutes.
OPTION 2: Look at the photos you have on your phone, on your fridge, or in a photo album, and think of a story DIFFERENT from the one that the photo shows. Come up with a new story that the photo COULD be about and make nonfiction into fiction.
That’s it; that’s all for today. Be sure to check in tomorrow for day three: READING AS A WRITER!
Have a beautiful ____________!
