Day 09 Writing Workout

Welcome to Day 9 of our 30-day writing workout, and it’s focused on… REJECTIONS.
Every writer is going to face rejection, and yes, we all know what it feels like for someone to say “Thanks, but no thanks.” Early on in my writing career, another author told me, “You have to have rhinoceros skin.” He meant I needed to be tough and suck it up, but there is much more you can do than that when you get a rejection…
First realize, it is ONE PERSON’s opinion. That particular editor didn’t “get you,” but that doesn’t mean someone else won’t.
One way to lessen the sting is to keep looking for markets the piece might be appropriate for. Have others to send it to if you get a rejection.
Next, it’s important to see what KIND of rejection you got…
If it’s a form letter rejection, one that sounds like a letter they send for every piece they don’t publish, then it’s not very helpful.
BUT
If there is any kind of personal comment or any kind of encouragement, pay attention. Sometimes an editor might say, “This piece isn’t quite right for us, but please send more of your work in the future.” Pay attention.
AND if editors take time to make additional comments, you know you are close. They see something they like, and they want to encourage you. Be encouraged—not all rejections are the same.
If you get specific comments, put the piece aside for a day or two and then look at it with fresh eyes. Rewrite it if you think the comments or some of them, are helpful in any way.
When in doubt, don’t wallow. Start on a fresh, new piece of writing… the one they CAN’T refuse!
Take care and watch for workout 10 soon on… Imaginative Imagery!
